What:
Curating a retrospective of 20th century music for the Whitney Museum of American Art.
When: 1998
Project Challenge:
The Whitney Museum of American Art presented a retrospective of 20th century art and culture under the title, “The American Century,” and approached Funny Garbage (FG) to curate the musical selections and to write catalogue essays related to the impact of music on culture and new media.
How did we do it?
We were honored to synopsize the cultural history of American music for such a prestigious art exhibition.
This project illustrates the high regard held for FG among the world’s elite cultural institutions and our ability to select, design and represent cultural history at the highest level. The skill set gained from collaboration on the retrospective will be increasingly valuable as the web develops into a premier medium for filtering and presenting a wide variety of cultural materials for consumers.
