What: Funny Garbage executes comprehensive front-end and back-end redesign of cable channel’s website, guiding users through its rich library of classic films.
Where: www.amctv.com
When: November 2000-May 2001
How did we do it? American Movie Classics approached Funny Garbage to create a web site that would promote its on-air priorities while bringing to life its behind the scenes content. Our goal was to create a site that captured the flash, glitz, and glamour of Hollywood without compromising AMCTV.com’s practical role as a robust programming guide.
Using Vingette Story Server, our designers and technologists worked together to create a modular site whose content could constantly shift to match the channel’s programming. Homepage promotables that drive users deeper into the site come and go based on AMC’s weekly schedule. Navigation elements are flexible so they can be updated as the site’s well of content expands. We produced a Leslie Neilson-narrated Three Stooges quiz game to make users aware of AMC’s celebrity hosts. Our digital studio created a rotating Flash feature as a fitting spotlight for AMC’s top offerings – giving FG the opportunity to bring vintage movie poster graphics to life on the web.
FG’s passion for film allowed us to act as partners with AMC in developing both their online infrastructure and their online content. FG helped AMC pick imagery, prioritize content, and form insights into what cinephiles would want from their site. We offered classic film fans the ultimate site on the net, bringing the AMC slogan to life: “Great Movies. And the stories behind them.”
Why was it successful?
- AMC’s licensing agreements with over a half dozen major movie studios provides them access to a library of five thousand plus films.
- AMC owns a robust database of film information and behind the scenes audio and video related to their movies, a trove of value-added content waiting to be utilized.
- FG’s information architects weave together AMC’s licensed materials and AMC’s own original content, fulfilling the network’s goal to make the ties between the two explicit.
- FG’s graphic designers create a modular design that will accommodate the site’s content as it evolves . A revolving Flash feature on the home page evokes classic movie posters, drawing traffic to AMC’s on-air priorities.
- FG’s technology department uses Vignette Story Server to provide AMC a customized content management tool to curate their site on an ongoing basis.
