BPOD Digital Media Station
What: Funny Garbage develops a next generation distribution platform for BPOD Network Inc. (BPOD). The platform is a new approach to the promotion and sale of media products such as music, DVDs and games in the retail space.

When: January 2002 - 2003, Beta release June 2002

How did we do it?
BPOD approached Funny Garbage (FG) to develop a customized, responsive and opportunistic distribution channel for popular media as part of a broader innovative marketing and network strategy. Working with BPOD and associated retail partners, high-end kiosks, called Digital Media Stations, were conceptualized and developed as a centerpiece in physical retail space for promoting and experiencing media products such as CDs and DVDs available for sale in the store. Our goal was to take advantage of the rich content sources available to create an engaging user experience that supported direct interaction with users as well as the marketing and selling of merchandise.

FG provided a full spectrum of services for the Digital Media Station development ranging from hardware research and selection, content programming, video editing, and application integration to overall design and technical development.

The user experience centers on a personalized 3-D environment with screens rotating in and out of the interface. Users are enticed to use the Station with video attract loops that feature media content available on the kiosk and a live camera feed capturing the user’s likeness. Whether featured within the kiosk or bar code scanned from a physical product, users are able to sample music from CDs, clips from DVDs, and view gameplay from popular games. A music recommendation engine called Tune Genie(TM) allows users to discover their favorite music in order to build a personalized music library. Once engaged in the experience, users create a library of favorite media for later use. It is envisioned that BPOD will offer custom CD compilations from this system in the near future.

The Digital Media Station featured the latest and advanced hardware including a Macintosh G4 Dual-Processor. User interaction was centered on an 18” LCD touch screen while media content was featured on a 22” Apple Cinema Display. In addition, many peripherals including a credit card reader, a bar code reader, an advanced audio system and live camera were integrated.

BPOD, under an exclusive agreement with a major college bookstore company, will be rolling out the Digital Media Stations to ten college markets within the next twelve to eighteen months. BPOD is also focusing on the teen and adult markets and is already in discussions with other major retailers. BPOD will be utilizing FG on further developments and enhancements to the product as well as a large scale deployment of the Digital Media Stations to non-traditional retail destinations.
