What: Boomkat, a pop band featuring lead singer, Taryn Manning, teamed with director Marcus Raboy to create a video for “What U Do To Me”. Funny Garbage created and implemented the special effects for the video which required a strong eighties design sense.
When: July – October 2003
How did we do it?
- The concept behind the video was inspired by the effects featured in the eighties iconic film, “Xanadu.” Oddly, the advancements in technology made the current special effects too good. Funny Garbage had to simplify effects in order to replicate the lo-fi graphic quality available 20 years ago.
- Funny Garbage essentially functioned as a post-production effects house, getting the footage after the video was shot and edited, and sending the final product to the on-line facility. The director and artist alike were thrilled with the final results.
Why was it successful?
This eighties style video aimed to capture a certain bubblegum spirit that defines that era. This style permeated all aspects, from the clothes to the dance styles, to the special effects that Funny Garbage created, unifying the themes the director, Marcus Raboy, was exploring.
